Period of stay outside the Netherlands

If you get an AIO supplement, there are rules for if you want to go on holiday. It is important for you to know what these rules are because if you stay outside the Netherlands for too long, your AIO supplement will stop. You can reapply once you have returned to the Netherlands.

If your partner stays outside the Netherlands for too long, your AIO supplement may be adjusted.

How many weeks can you stay outside the Netherlands?

If you get an AIO supplement, you can stay outside the Netherlands for a maximum of 91 days (13 weeks) per year. Even if your stay starts in one calendar year and ends in the next calendar year, you cannot stay away for longer than 91 consecutive days. If you do, your AIO supplement will stop.

If you have a partner who has reached their AOW pension age, the 91-day limit also applies to them.

If you have a partner who has not yet reached their AOW pension age, your partner can stay outside the Netherlands for a maximum of 28 days (4 weeks). If they exceed this limit, your AIO supplement will stop.

Report a stay outside the Netherlands

If you are going to be staying outside the Netherlands for longer than 91 days over the course of 1 year, please let us know. If you are going to be staying outside the Netherlands for a shorter period, you do not need to report this to us.

Make sure you let us know the period or periods you will be away, also for your partner.

We check to see what assets you have

Every year, we send you a letter explaining the rules if you want to spend time outside the Netherlands. The letter also explains that assets outside the Netherlands, such houses or land, are taken into account in assessing entitlement to an AIO supplement. It is therefore important that you report any such assets to us. We may ask you to fill in a separate form about this.
