How to claim child benefit at twice the basic rate

Read the step-by-step explanation to find out what happens when you claim child benefit at twice the basic rate for a child living at home who needs extensive care.

  1. Step 1. You submit your claim to the SVB

Child benefit at twice the basic rate can only be claimed by the person who has claimed child benefit at the basic rate.

  1. Step 2. We ask the Care Needs Assessment Centre (CIZ) for its opinion

If you think your child needs extensive care , we will ask the CIZ to assess whether this is the case. When the CIZ has completed its assessment, it will give its opinion.

  1. Step 3. You fill in the forms the CIZ sends you

The CIZ will ask you to send the following within 4 weeks:

    • A completed extensive form
    • A completed authorisation form
    • Medical documents regarding your child’s illness or condition

Please take into account that it takes time to collect together the information and fill in and send the forms. If you have any questions about the information the CIZ requires from you, you can phone the CIZ on +31 88 789 1400

Important: Do not send any medical information to the SVB, as it will not be taken into account in the assessment.

  1. Step 4. You receive a confirmation letter from the CIZ

Within 1 week of receiving the completed forms and information from you, the CIZ will send you a letter to confirm that it will start assessing your child’s needs.

  1. Step 5, The CIZ makes its assessment and formulates its opinion

The CIZ will make a thorough assessment of your child’s situation. They will phone you if they need any additional information. They will also phone you if they think they may have to give a negative opinion.

  1. Step 6. You will receive a letter from the CIZ

The letter will inform you of the CIZ’s opinion.

  1. Step 7. The CIZ sends its opinion to the SVB online

The SVB will decide whether or not you qualify for child benefit at twice the basic rate, taking account of the CIZ’s opinion.

  1. Step 8. We will send you our decision

You will receive our decision within 8 weeks of the date of your claim. If the CIZ needs more time to formulate an opinion, we will let you know in writing.
