Applying for a DigiD from outside the Netherlands

If you live outside the Netherlands, you can apply for a DigiD if you have Dutch nationality or the nationality of another country of the European Economic Area (EEA). Find out what else you will need.

What will you need to have ready?

In order to apply for a DigiD from outside the Netherlands, you will need the following:

  • a valid passport or identity card
  • registration in the Dutch Non-residents Records Database (RNI)
  • a Burgerservicenummer (BSN)
  • a mobile telephone that can receive text messages
  • an email address

Applying for a DigiD and receiving your activation code

  1. Apply for a DigiD via the DigiD website

    You can apply for a DigiD via the DigiD website. You will then receive a service desk code by text message and email. You can use this code within 30 days to get your DigiD activation code

  2. Receiving your activation code

    If you are outside the Netherlands, you can receive your activation code via a video call. You can also collect it in person from a DigiD service desk in or outside the Netherlands. Check whether you need to make an appointment first.

    Make an appointment for a video call with a Netherlands Worldwide staff member to get your activation code. You need the code to activate your DigiD.

    If you want to pick up your activation code from a DigiD service desk, check whether you need to make an appointment first. The service desk will give you a code that you can use to activate your DigiD. 

Applying for a DigiD if you receive an AOW old-age pension

If you are receiving an AOW pension, or you have had a letter from us stating that you will receive an AOW pension, you can apply for a DigiD via My SVB.
