Qualifying conditions for an orphan’s benefit

To claim an orphan’s benefit, you must meet various qualifying conditions. Check whether you meet the conditions.

  1. When you are considered to be an orphan

You can only claim an orphan’s benefit if you are an orphan. You are generally considered to be an orphan when your last surviving parent has died, but you can also be regarded as an orphan in other situations.

  1. Was your parent insured for orphan’s benefit?

Your last surviving parent must have been insured under the orphan’s benefit scheme on the date of their death. People are usually insured if they resided or worked in the Netherlands on the date of their death, but exceptions apply.

  1. Do additional qualifying conditions apply?

Additional qualifying conditions apply to orphans between the ages of 16 and 21, for example whether they are still in school or whether they are taking care of the household.
