You are going to live or work outside the Netherlands
If you start living or working outside the Netherlands, your insurance under the AOW old-age pension scheme and the Anw survivor benefit scheme will probably stop. This is also true if you are going to study or do an internship outside the Netherlands or if you are going on a round-the-world trip.
If your insurance stops, your AOW pension will stop growing and your partner and children will not be able to get an Anw survivor benefit in the event of your death.
Your AOW pension will be reduced by 2% for each year you were not insured under the AOW pension scheme. You can prevent this by taking out voluntary insurance.
If you are not insured under the Anw scheme and you pass away, your partner will not be able to get an Anw survivor benefit or your children will not be able to get an orphan’s benefit. You can prevent this by taking out voluntary Anw insurance. Your partner and children must also meet the other benefit conditions.
If your insurance in the Netherlands ends because you start living or working outside the Netherlands, you have 1 year to apply for voluntary insurance.
However, it is best not to delay your application for voluntary Anw insurance. If you are not insured under the Anw scheme and you pass away, your partner and children will not be able to get a survivor benefit or orphan’s benefit under the Anw scheme.
If you are going to study or do an internship outside the Netherlands, or you are going on a round-the-world trip, your insurance under the AOW and Anw schemes will probably stop. If you want to know what will happen in your situation, please contact us.
