Claiming Anw survivor benefit if you live outside the Netherlands
If you live outside the Netherlands, how to claim your Dutch Anw survivor benefit depends on the country where you live. The rules for Member States of the European Union (EU ) are different from the rules for treaty countries , countries in the European Economic Area (EEA ) and other countries.
If you meet the qualifying conditions and you have not yet reached your AOW pension age , you may qualify for Anw survivor benefit.
If you live in an EU country
You can choose how to claim an Anw survivor benefit. You can do this via the social security institution :
- in the country where you live, or
- via the social security institution in the country where your late partner was last insured
Our advice: claim an Anw survivor benefit in the country where you live.
You live in a treaty country or in an EEA country
If you live in a treaty country or in an EEA country, you should claim an Anw survivor benefit via the social security institution in the country where your late partner or ex-partner was last insured.
You live in another country
If you do not live in an EU or EEA country or a treaty country, please contact us.
You want to claim a survivor benefit from a country other than the Netherlands
Which country you can claim a survivor benefit from depends on where your partner or ex-partner worked.
Your partner or ex-partner worked in an EU or EEA country or a treaty country
In that case, you may be able to get a survivor benefit from that country. We will arrange for a claim to be sent to the benefit organisation of that country.
Your partner or ex-partner did not work in an EU or EEA country or a treaty country, but in another country
In that case, you must contact the benefit agency of that country yourself about claiming a survivor benefit.
Reporting changes
If you are receiving a survivor benefit from a country other than the Netherlands, you must report certain changes to us because they could affect your Dutch Anw survivor benefit.
