Applying for a DigiD if you live outside the Netherlands and receive an AOW pension

If you live outside the Netherlands and you receive an AOW pension, or you have received a letter from the SVB informing you about your first AOW pension payment, you can apply to us for a DigiD quickly and easily. Read our step-by-step explanation of how to apply for a DigiD if you live outside the Netherlands.

Step 1. Prepare your application for a DigiD

Make sure you have the following:

  • A Burgerservicenummer (BSN )
  • A mobile phone
  • An email address

Step 2. Start your application for a DigiD

  • Go to the page entitled ‘Applying for a DigiD if you live outside the Netherlands’
  • Submit your application in Dutch or English.  
  • Complete the following steps and enter your personal details: 
  • Click ‘Next’ 
  • We will check your information immediately 

Step 3. Complete your application for a DigiD on the DigiD website

If your details match the details in our records, you will automatically be directed to the DigiD website  

  • Create a username and password  
  • Enter your mobile number 
  • You will receive an SMS message containing a code
  • Enter the code   
  • Your application for a DigiD is now complete 
  • You will shortly receive a letter from DigiD containing an activation code   

Step 4. Activate your DigiD with the code from the letter

When you have completed your application, you will receive a letter from DigiD containing a DigiD activation code. The code will be valid for 45 days. It is therefore important that you activate your DigiD on time. If you do not, you will need to submit a new application for a DigiD via My SVB. 

Step 5. Download the DigiD app

The easiest way to log in securely is by using the DigiD app.  

After you have downloaded the DigiD app, you will need to activate it. You only need to do this once, either by entering an SMS code or carrying out an ID check.
