Applying for a DigiD if you live outside the Netherlands and you receive, or will soon start to receive, an AOW pension

If you live outside the Netherlands and you are receiving an AOW pension, or you have received a letter from the SVB informing you about your first AOW pension payment, you can apply to us for a DigiD . Read in 4 steps what you need and how you can apply.

Step 1. Prepare your application for a DigiD

To apply for a DigiD, you need the following:

  • Your Burgerservicenummer (BSN )
  • A mobile phone
  • An email address

Step 2. Start your application for a DigiD on the SVB website

Go to ‘Applying for a DigiD if you live outside the Netherlands’ (available in Dutch and English):

  • Complete the following steps and enter your personal details:
  • Click or tap ‘Continue’
  • We will check your information immediately

Step 3. Continue with your application for a DigiD

If the details are correct, you will automatically be directed to the DigiD website, where you must complete the following steps:

  • Create a username and password
  • Fill in your mobile number
  • You will receive an SMS code
  • Enter the code
  • Your application for a DigiD is now complete
  • You will receive a letter from DigiD

Step 4. Activate your DigiD with the code from the letter

When you have completed your application, you will receive a letter from DigiD containing a DigiD activation code . The code will be valid for 45 days. It is therefore important that you activate your DigiD on time. If you do not, you will need to submit a new application for a DigiD with us.

Extra step: download the DigiD app

If you prefer to manage your affairs using an app, download the DigiD app . After you have downloaded the DigiD app, you will need to activate it by entering an SMS code or running an ID check .
