Applying for a DigiD if you live outside the Netherlands
If you live outside the Netherlands and you do not receive an AOW pension, or you have not received a letter informing you about your first AOW pension payment, read our step-by-step explanation of how to apply for a DigiD .
Step 1. Prepare your application for a DigiD
Make sure you have the following:
- A valid passport or identity card
- A registration in the Register of Non-Residents (RNI )
- A Burgerservicenummer (BSN )
- A mobile telephone you can receive SMS messages on
- An email address
Step 2. Applying for a DigiD and receiving an activation code
- Go to the DigiD website to apply for a DigiD code
- When you have completed your application, you will receive a service desk code by SMS message and email. You will need this service desk code in order to receive your DigiD activation code
Step 3. Collect your activation code
You must collect your activation code within 30 days. If you live outside the Netherlands, you can do this by video call. If you live in the Netherlands, you need to visit a DigiD service desk.
- Make an appointment for a video call with a Netherlands Worldwide staff member
- You will be given your activation code during the call
- Before you visit a DigiD service desk, check whether you need to make an appointment first
- When you visit the service desk, you will be given your DigiD activation code

Step 4. Activate your DigiD by entering your activation code
In order to log in, you need to activate your DigiD account by entering your activation code. You must activate your DigiD within 21 days.
